Canadian Association of Black Lawyers (CABL) Honours Community Mentors
The Canadian Association of Black Lawyers (CABL) honoured mentors in the community.
The organization specifically honoured the contributions of Omar Ha-Redeye, Patricia DeGuire and Anthony Ross.
Omar Ha-Redeye has been a mentor for members of the Black Law Students Association of Canada (BLSAC), as well participating in extensive informal mentorships within the community and through teaching. He pointed out that he was the youngest of the mentors being honoured, and emphasized that it was never to early in your career to help others.
He also explained how creating a network of mentors can be invaluable in practice, and may be part of the solution in addressing the disproportionate amount of discipline by the law society against black lawyers in Ontario. This problem was discussed by Clayton Ruby in his dissent in Law Society of Upper Canada v. McSween, 2012 ONSLAP 3.
