The Flea Marketplace of Ideas

Omar Ha-Redeye spoke to Matt Galloway on Metro Morning about Anders Breivik, the Norway bomber, and his use of social media and the internet.

He explained that the reason we value freedom of expression is the concept of the free marketplace of ideas, and how with social media these ideas can often be poorly researched or not well thought out, creating a “flea marketplace” of “cheap” ideas.

The solution was greater engagement of the academic establishment in this marketplace, challenging intolerant and dangerous ideologies like those espoused by Breivik.
